Coming from the electrical utility background "Standard" is not a word with most companies when it comes to mapping. I have seen the symbol for a utility pole from a circle to diamonds and every thing in between. With the water utilities I spoke with in this part of the country (Rural TN) the "maps' are all in the head of the oldest guy there. It's the "I know where that value is I don't need no piece of paper telling me what's out there."

We are basically looking for highly standardized symbols for utilities and
other generic map features. For example the symbol for a valve in a typical
county water system, is that standardized for the most part? If so, is that
available to download?

On a similar note, if you have ArcGIS installed you can import any of the
ESRI true type font symbol sets into a MapGuide symbol library via MapGuide
Studio.  This works pretty well except that they are treated as one color
without separate line an fill colors.  Note that this may be subject to some
ESRI copyright restrictions so user beware.

There are also some additional font symbol sets available on the internet
that can be imported the same way.  Here is one:

Just so happens I am in the process of creating some based on the ESRI
symbols used. They will be blocks that you can set color to (hopefully in
MG, they work OK in Map 3D) Anything you looking for in particular?
Yes I'll will give them away after I complete them.
