Well couple things 
1. What version of SDE client has? 
2. What version of MGE or MOS you are using 

SDE 9.1 works fine with MGE 2007 
If you have SDE 9.2 then you have to use current version of MOS as FDO 3.2
supports SDE9.2 

I have implemented a complex application with SDE 9.1 and MGE 2007 and it’s
on line now. It’s really cool to work with both ESRI and open source
technology
