Binary Large Object
Basically it means you have to either use a specific software to read and
write to data fields. (more than one software do that) Or use a middle teir
software that understands the particular "binary" of each filed and
translates to different software (that is what ESRI ArcSDE does).

Colette,
BLOB is a data type, and doesn't tell you much on its own.
If they're using ArcSDE, it probably means that they're using its native
data type instead of Oracle / DB2 / whatever.
If they're using a different database, I have no idea what it means...
