Hey Jason,
I appreciate the quick response! For now I will only be accessing via
mapguide and ado.net
2008 will not be released until February 27th...And my deadline is a lot
sooner that to complete this project.
For the most part I will only need to perform simple updates, and
reporting for now via asp.net and sql 2005 reporting. I think I may
give MsSqlSpatial a try and see how it pans out. Then hopefully it may
be an easy migration to 2008 in the spring...
Thanks,
Brian Berdel

Hi Brian,
What is your use case for the spatial database? Do you need to access
it using more than just MapGuide?
My understanding is that the MsSqlSpatial provider is functional but not
fully featured. Perhaps Haris will be able to pop in and comment on
this.
Can you afford to wait until SQL Server 2008 comes out with native
spatial support?
PostGIS / PostgreSQL is an extremely capable and robust spatial database
system. Its capabilities are similar to SQL Server 2005, apart from
some of the higher-end enterprise features. The PostGIS provider is
still in early days, but is settling down nicely. There are apparently
.Net drivers available for PostgreSQL; I don't know if this means that
it integrates into Visual Studio the same way that MS SQL does though.

We are going to migrate everything into spatial databases, but I wanted
to get some feedback from the group if possible on your experiences with
the different products. We currently have SQL 2005 and I am very
comfortable with it, from what I can tell the only spatial product that
is compatible is ArcSDE. Is that true? Also, I believe you need to
purchase the full ArcGIS server suite now.
Secondly how is PostGIS / PostgreSQL? Pro's Con's?
I develop in .NET so I would like to use SQL 2005 if possible.
