I'm not sure if that is still accurate.  This RFC is still marked as pending, but most of the changes in it have been implemented:

If the SELECTIONCOLOR parameter has been implemented, then it should be possible to hack the template files to append it to each GETDYNAMICMAPOVERLAYIMAGE request.

selection alas is hardwired to blue, you can, *cough* compile your own
version with a different
hardwired selection colour or develop some code to make it configurable
