Sorry, there are no user guides for Maestro yet.
There are some MapGuide "Getting Started" guides:

Since you cannot connect, there are a few things to consider:
1. Did you install MapGuide with Apache?
If so, you must use the url:
http://localhost:8008/mapguide/

2. Did you install MapGuide enterprise?
If so, you must add the version number to the url:
http://localhost/mapguide2008/

3. Do you have a firewall?
If so, the webserver must be able to listen on the correct port (IIS = 
80, Apache 80 or 8008).
Maestro must be able to connect to port 80.
