That is how Studio does it. If you change the datasource, it resets your 
layer.
You can use Maestro to change the FeatureSource, but you have to 
manually check that
your new FeatureSource has all the columns used in the layer setup.

You can also just accept that the layer is reset, and set it up again.

If the layer was non-modified when you began, I suggest you send a bug 
report to Autodesk.
