If you are using GDAL, the debugging trick explained here, should at
least give you a hint:

You can also try the GDalInfo tool, and examine the tiffs for differences:
http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/DownloadingGdalBinaries
FWTools is the full package, not sure what minimal packages that have
GdalInfo.
