Actually, it is possible. I found performance gains by using SQL Server 2008. The keys to success are making sure you have the tables structured correctly and properly indexed. If you are using themes, then make multiple connections to the data and use SQL queries instead. I will agree that SDF is faster than SHP.

I was trying to load data from SQL Server 2008 using the Osgeo FDO Provider
for SQL Server Spatial data connection in MapGuide Enterprise 2010. It
seems slower than shapefiles when previewing in MapGuide Studio. I find SDF
format to be the fastest of the 3 formats.
I originally had a shapefile about 100 MB in size. The loading time in
MapGuide:
SQL Server - 41 seconds
Shapefile - 30 seconds
SDF - 15 seconds
Any ideas how to make loading from SQL Server data faster with MapGuide?
Does it have something to do with FDO provider?
