Just a thought, maybe your problem is related to the following ticket with
the FDO Postgis provider  http://trac.osgeo.org/fdo/ticket/530

Try using Postgis 1.3.3 or 1.3.4.

I use a winxp machine with mapguide 2.0.x, postgresql 8.2.9 and postgis
1.3.3 as a development environment and it works pretty well.
