I will jump a bit before Jason answers it :)
Yes, one of advantages of GeoREST is that you don't need additional server
side code to allow MapGuide to talk with database.
In our implementations we use just HTML forms (in some cases with javascript
but plain html form would work too) to edit data. By submitting HTML form to
GeoREST , data will be updated either trough MapGuide or trough FDO
depending of particular layer configuration.
Another use of HTML forms is to create query/filter request to search over
data.
Also to generate reports (HTML) we use only html like text templates, no
server side code needed to create html's from MapGuide/FDO data.
