I did some more digging.

The below error message is what I get when I first run the update and
overwrite the sdf.  

"An exception occured in FDO component. SDF spatial index error."

After I restart the MGE server when I get that error and refresh the viewer,
I get the following message"

"The specified class was not found."

So, I went and reviewed the datasource in studio which was correct.  It had
all the data and feature types as expected.  I could browse the datasource
in studio correct.  I reviewed the layer which was failing and the Feature
class and geometry were no longer populated.  

I tried Zach's suggestion to save the datasource even though it looked
correct, and then I went back to the layer in studio and it was all working
as it should have been.  The map also worked once again.

Gord, I looked at the settings in the serverconfig that we have and its
setup as follows:

DataConnectionPoolEnabled = 1
DataConnectionPoolExcludedProviders = none
