For anyone trying to do this in ASP 
I tracked down a solution. Put your function that digitizes and posts to the
server in your script tag. Then in your pageload method use this:

        if (!this.IsPostBack)
        {
            ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(Page, Page.GetType(),
"ArbitraryName", "YourFunctionName();", true);
        }

For me, the function was only processed the first time the page was loaded.
