I thought the question was for raster support of symbols. You can use a raster image, you just have to edit the xml where I thought the user wanted a GUI to do so...maybe I was wrong.

Are you aware that you can type any value into the "ABC" list as it was made
an editable combo control?
This is not ideal - the ideal would be a TrueType viewer - but a combination
of Windows CharacterMap and some copy/paste will allow you to preview and
work with varied symbols, albeit not 100% efficiently.
