I agree about the voting for new features...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but raster is supported, it just requires you to set the extents manually, rather than automatic. In my mind that is not critical, but it would be nice.

I think that this ticket should be high priority. Raster provider support is pretty important. I haven't see any GIS project without raster base layer in last couple of years.
It would be nice that community can vote for "new features list" or have more influence what is important for next release.

Why submit this as a blocker to 2.2 at this late stage? It has been the behavior for all versions so far. I view this as an enhancement, not a last minute fix to get 2.2 out. Why not set it for 2.3?
