Are you using Studio or Maestro?  Create a data connection->select the appropriate SQL Server FDO connection->fill in the blanks->connect.  Then using that data connection, add a layer.

How to connect MapGuide Open Source to MS SQL 2008 Server DB.
I don't know how to connect to the MS SQL database which is operating on it's own database server.
