I'd think you're better off calling some PHP wrapper using MgFeatureService

query() just calls into QUERYMAPFEATURES in the mapgent, which is really
just for: 

 a) doing map selections through some spatial criteria (ie. your mouse
pointer)
 b) doing tooltip queries. 

It's not really a general query function
