Connecting to a directory of SDF files makes no real sense as a single SDF
file can have multiple feature classes.

SHP files are restricted to single feature classes, but you can masquerade
SHP feature sources as multi-class by connecting to a directory of SHP
files. That's why FDO supports supports connecting to a directory of SHP
files.
