Studio - Problems with odbc and geometry

I'm trying to set up the geometry for an odbc table of mine. In "Refine 
Data Setup", when I check the "Geometry" checkbox and pick my X and Y 
fields, Studio gives me an error. It says "External component has thrown 
an exception" when i try to save the database connection. Is there some 
sort of specific data type that those fields need to be (mine are 
doubles...I've also tried singles)?
