Are you using any raster layers? Those can certainly slow things down if 
they are large. If you want a really fast application, in my opinion you 
need to turn off any rasters by default. Even a 1Mb MrSID can slow 
things down quite a bit. If you take that same MrSID and make it into a 
JPEG, it seems to work better. In my application, I have about 8 MrSID 
images. If I make the mistake of zooming all the way out, and turning on 
the raster group, I've got to wait a minute for them to all load. A JPG 
of the same area is much faster.

As for filters / themes, I've noticed no impact on performance from 
themes....in the past, I've noticed filters could slow things down. I'd 
be more inclined to use themes, personally....The big problem with that 
though is that you then can't turn off any 1 part of that themed layer 
(like you could if you had a bunch of filters layers). Maybe that's 
something that we could add to the wishlist though....
