MapProxy will still make two requests to the same server when one layer has a different request format, for example, or when there is another layer in between (layers=lyr1srv1,lyr1srv2,lyr2srv1).  That's what I meant with 'merging source requests'. If MapProxy makes multiple requests, then it will merge the image responses.
