if I use a wgs84 (GLOBAL_GEODETIC) grid with the mapnik source, the 
shift is gone, see http://www.gis-hosting.lu/examples/test_wgs84.html 
for a comparison

Do you have by any chance more information what proj 4.8.0 broke?
