Mh, this seems to be some kind of Mapserver problem and not Mapproxy 
related. The Mapproxy log output tells me of a ServiceException 
LayerNotDefined, but I checked thrice now: The layer is there and 
correctly spelled. Shp2img works too ...
Hah, found it: You can't have more than one layer with the same name, 
even if their validity/visibility is ruled by scale. I just commented 
out all layers except for one and now I get a different error :-( PIL 
doesn't find the zip decoder. Sometimes I feel like Sisyphus ...
