[MapProxy] mapproxy-util autoconfig encodig problem

Dear mailing list,

I have a question about the mapproxy-util autoconfig option: When I parse the capabilities of my WMS with autoconfig, the german umlauts in the mapproxy.yaml are coded as follows:

       abstract: "Dieser Layer der Liegenschaftskarte im Ma\xDFstab 1:500 in schwarz-wei\xDF\
            \ enth\xE4lt die Bauwerke."

When I load the capabilities in chrome or with curl, they are encoded in UTF-8. The mapproxy.yaml is also displayed as UTF-8 encoded. If I save the capabilities via curl, the umlauts are displayed correctly.
So it must probably be a python setting.
Can anyone give me a hint as to whether and where this can be set?
