And more, the section to set the location of libjpeg is no longer run
before the gd code in configure.in. Looks like the GD test can never
succeed if GD was built with jpeg support.

More information. Config.log gives me:

gcc -o conftest -g -O2   conftest.c -lgd  -lfreetype -lpng -lz  
-liconv  -lm -lstdc++  >&5
ld: warning prebinding disabled because dependent library:
/usr/local/lib/libgd.
2.dylib is not prebound
ld: Undefined symbols:
_jpeg_CreateCompress
_jpeg_CreateDecompress
_jpeg_destroy
_jpeg_destroy_compress
...and so on...

for some reason libjpeg is not being picked up and included test program
compilation, so the test program fails.

Anyone else having trouble building from scratch via the CVS? Granted
I'm on a mac and it seems have somewhat mystical powers from time to
time, but as recently as 1/20 all was well. Issue is that configure is
not finding GD even though it's new enough and in the normal place. The
recent changes in configure.in don't seem like they could be the issue.

Could someone try on their machine (autoconf etc...) and confirm the
problem is limited to me.
