Would it have made sense to use the layer's group variable as the group 
id instead of a metadata for the grouping?

I presume the other metadata for the group (name and description) will 
be taken from the first layer in a given group in the mapfile, the same 
way that this currently works for grouped WMS layers. Should this be 
specified?


It's rare that this happens, I usually have good opinions on things, but 
in this case I can't make my mind on whether this should be integrated 
directly in MapServer or kept as a separate project built on top of 
libmap.so. As I said and wrote in previous discussions, there as many 
good reasons for than against direct integration.

So I'll vote +0 because I can't make my mind one way or the other. Note 
that I am +1 on the rest of the implementation plan, so whatever the 
rest of the group decides with respect to direct integration or not will 
be good with me.
