I think you you need to start by providing more information, like what 
is the error? What version of postgres and postgis.

select version();
select postgis_full_version();

How was the shapefile created?
What do you mean by merged features?
How are they merged?
What software merged them?

This should probably be moved to the mapserver-user list or the postGIS 
list.
