This error is caused by the version of the MITAB library included in the 
SVN trunk version of GDAL, probably this MITAB bug:

This and a few other issues are fixed in the current CVS (dev) version 
of the MITAB library. I have upgraded the copy that's included in OGR 
SVN trunk a few minutes ago, so you can either get the latest GDAL SVN 
trunk, or get GDAL 1.4.2 which is based on a stable release of MITAB 
that didn't have this bug.
