Questions re. 5.0.0-beta1

Ok, tickets #2184 and #2185 are created.  I should correct what I said below
about the configure options - they don't cause 'make' to fail (this actually
does appear to complete ok), but rather they prevent the dll from working
during runtime (either during make test, or with other applications).
