Classify layer on joined ODBC table

Are there some special reasons why this isn't possible, or have just not
been prioritized? I can see some performance problems, but the
functionality would be great. To have a shape-file that can be rendered
dependent on values from an external database is what wee need. As long
I know, that is something that ArcIMS don't have.
