Is the idea of accessing the queryObj through layer->map->query not ok? That object stores the type of query and the type is set to MS_QUERY_IS_NULL if in draw mode.

Would it be a big effort to include that additional parameter passed to the driver (in time of the whichShapes call) to make sure about the purpose of the query? This would help the driver to decide whether a single row forward only cursor is sufficient or a block based approach should be used at the 'low level' driver when retrieving the data from the server.

FYI I updated RFC 65 with a bit more detail on implementation and impact... Again, feedback most welcome.
