[mapserver-dev] REST config API

Bart,

I'm not familiar with Geoserver's REST interface, but making somewhat
Mapserver configurable on-the-fly (or at least making the default behavior more
implementor-friendly) is something I'm interested in.

My problem is not with the mapserver-client interaction (which is what REST
defines, I think), but with the mapserver-datasource interaction, but they could
be related.

As an implementor why do I need to specify the CLASSes (if I'm getting
symbology/styling from database attributes)? Why do I need to specify the
TEMPLATE to get any attributes values from a query?

And here's a question for developers: What is the minimum set of required
entries in a MAP file to render a map graphic (e.g. from a shape file)? Now,
why are those entries required? Is it possible for mapserver to create
reasonable defaults from the datasource?

Best regards,
Brent Fraser
