After a short sweep through the OWSes I found that SOS, WCS (1.0, 1.1, 
2.0) and WFS are treating all non-POST requests as GET. WMS does not 
support POST requests and thus treats every request as GET.

As far as I can tell I cannot spot a reason for backwards incompatibility.
