using a tiff or geotiff as a map

Morning all,

Having reviewed the user documentation and examples. I am confused as to how
I might use a tiff or geotiff as the underlying map. I could really use an
example. I have lat / long in data which i would like to represent on the
tiff. Can I get some help or get pointed to an existing example which
someone may have created.??
