returning a feature id from a grid ref

Hi,

does anyone know if it is possible to pass an x,y value and a layer name to
mapserv and get returned the feature id at that grid reference ?

Also, I have a database of points which I would like to project onto a map
but do not want to turn them into a point layer as the change often. I can
easily call the x,y values from my database but am I wasting my time trying
to project them on the map using the webuser layer feature (note, there may
be up to 50 points).
