The 'bit of work' is very simple.
1) Download gif2png for your platform from:
http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/gif2png/ You can batch convert all .GIFs
in a directory tree with a single command.
1) Then change any .GIF references in your .MAP and .HTML files to
.PNG.
Shouldn't take more than ten or fifteen minutes.
