more/solved: "new shapefileObj" causing bizarre errors

Sorry, my posting was incomplete. To clarify, the original shapefile name
was NAME.SHP

When renamed to name.shp the errors went away. I believe the problem is just
in the extension, as another file that works is called NAme.shp
