Combine shape files

Hi,

It is more of an ESRI question than a MapServer question. However, I can't find
any hints in ESRI archives, so I hope I can get some help here. I have ArcView
GIS only, have you guys seen any ArcView extensions or 3rd party software that
can combine several adjacent shape files into one shape file?  And is there a
performance difference for MapServer to use several smaller shape files or one
single larger shape file? Thanks.
