You can't, but should be able to with 3.7. I'm adding an offset
parameter to the new style support and this should allow for stuff like
this in addition to things like drop shadows for features.
One work around would be to use the ellipse as the symbol and then the
truetype piece as a label since labels already can be offset for more
control. This will work fine if you're not already using labeling for
that layer.

Good question!
I throw this back to the list for a possible answer.
The hard way would be to re-define the TTF giving it the origin to
correctly align them.
