Hi all,

OK, I have a new server to play with and I am compiling up Mapserver 3.6.
I have resolved to keep more detailed notes on how I set everything up and
have started a page for Debian on the Wiki:
http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?MapServerCompilation

Over the last couple of months I have seen and heard many things regarding
what version PHP I need and how it should be compiled. I'd appreciate it it
people could correct the following summary:

According to HISTORY.TXT, Mapserver 3.6 supports PHP 4.1.2 and 4.2.0
According to the 3.6 doco:
http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/doc36/phpmapscript-install-howto.html#server
I can use PHP as it is set up by Debian Linux (NB. only the testing release
packages 4.1.2, stable Debian still uses 4.0.3)

Presumably the thread safety issue is only for the Windows .dll and not Linux,
so I can compile up php_mapscipt.so as outlined in:
http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/doc36/phpmapscript-install-howto.html#build_lunix
(though I did get some alarming leaks when really loading PHPMapscript 3.5
by opening lots and lots of objects)

Aka, no need to muck around with compiling things to run as CGI, or installing
PHP4 outside of the Debian package mangement process.

Cheers,

Antti
