I needed the shape to be generated from MapServer using a POINT layer. If
you define the a POINT symbol as a diagonalfill of 60 kilometers, you get
one giant diagonalfill rather than a circle in a diagonalfill pattern.
However as Steve points out, the TRANSPARENCY feature of the LAYER object
added in 3.6 works brilliantly. I've already redesigned several other
things using this feature too.

circle shape and filling it with a diagonalfill?

rings that are transparent. I succeeded, but not in the way I want. I
