Well, that fixed it.

The question I have now:  You said "...a class with no color is considered invisible and is never drawn by MapServer 4.0." Should MapServer bomb when a symbol with no color set is supposed to display?

Either way, that fixes my problems.  Thanks very much for your help, as always!
