cool.  I was working on exactly the same method for making PDFs, just 
got side-tracked earlier this year.  One thing that's not metioned is 
that you will need to adjust all the SIZEs of lines, type and symbols 
accordingly - ie at 150dpi, x2 all sizes, and it gives you more 
flexibility in sizes.  When I get around to working on this again, I'll 
have to add it to this wiki page.

This method also works as a faster and more flexible method of 
anti-aliasing the map image for the web.  EVERYTHING must be drawn 
without antialiasing, then instead of placing the image in the PDF, 
resample the image with GD antialiased back to the desired web image 
size.  MUCH faster than the undocumented CARTOLINE symbol type.  And 
type antialiased this way instead of by MapServer looks better too.
