Pierre,

If you don't mind, a couple of questions:

1. Are the points along the measure line little div elements, img elements,
or something else?  What did you experiment with?

2. Am I correct in assuming that you check for a double click by comparing
the current point and the previous point and if they are the same then you
end the routine?

3. Could you share your area calculation of could you point me towards one
that's easy to use?

I developped the DHTML interface starting with the Landview DHTML's code 
(dBox).
You're able to measure distance and surface and it works on many (all) 
recent browsers of the different plateforms.
