Hi Tom,

I usually add the shared lib directory to the /etc/ld.so.conf file, and 
then I do
an "ldconfig" in that directory, to update.
Some OS's e.g. Solaris sometime need explicit lib path, e.g.

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="path to libs...." : export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
