Thanks for the help, I set LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib as suggested
but I still get the error

 "Could not find gd.h or libgd.a/libgd.so in /usr/local.  Make sure GD
2.0.12 or higher is compiled before calling configure."

are there any other work arounds you can think of?
