changing status by php

hello

 Is it possible to change maps' status dynamically by php_mapscript.
What I want to do change from default (or on) status value of a map to
off and
off status value  another layer  to  default.

Is this the proper way to show  and  hide  maps  ?

how can I use the map object and php code ?
