Shapefile format question.

Hopefully someone who knows more about the layout of a shapefile can
help here.
Is the segment between two points on a line object always a straight line?
I know a coverage is and we are using shapefiles translated from
coverages so it's probably safe to assume that is the case here but I
don't want to break my mapscript function for generic shapefiles we may
add later.
