You do need GDAL, but more importantly you need a
GDAL built with MrSID support which I don't believe is
included in the stock MS4W builds.

I *think* I wrote an email a few months ago to the MS4W
list about a MrSID plugin that was compatible with
a particular version of MS4W, but even for that you still
need to download the MrSID DLLs directly from
Lizardtech.

MrSID tends not to get built into stuff because
their SDK has somewhat unnerving rules about
redistribution.

The other option is to pay someone like DM Solutions
or me to prepare a custom build with MrSID support.
Of course, you can also do it yourself if you are fairly
savvy about building software from source, but I realize
that is not everyone forte.
