buttons and user interface question.

Dear all a newbie question,

I'm trying to create buttons to drive requests that are set to mapserver
(zoom, pan etc). I can do this no problem with radio buttons but I'd like
to use images. Could anyone suggest how this might be achieved? Is it
possible to query the current zoomdir zoom level(1,0,-1)) so that I could
use an onload js function to make sure the image is selected/active each
time the page is reloaded within the browser?
